Right now, at Whilton Locks Garden Village, we are full of colour. Colourful. Hues and shades can be seen in such abundance and the site looks absolutely fabulous.

Who knew colour psychology was thing?
There is specific rationale behind the reasons colours are associated with certain situations. Blue or greens for doctors and nurses, red for the fastest sports and racing cars, white for weddings and so on. In marketing, red makes you hungry, blue calms and yellow gives a pick-me-up.

“Colour is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings.”
Ok, we don’t really have a scooby-do what that means. It is probably a bit too deep, especially when you have just popped into Whilton for some compost. We do know the bags are located by our main entrance and, if you need us, we’ll even help to load your car – whatever colour it may be!

We do know colour offer different feelings and emotions.
Orange, for example, offers courage – confidence – warmth and energy.

Green: Health – hope – nature – fresh.

Yellow: Warmth – happiness – optimism – extrovert.

Purple: Wisdom – wealth – imagination – sophistication.

Blue: Trust – loyalty – serenity – security.

Red: Power – passion – excitement – fearlessness.
(I’m not 100% sure fearlessness is an actual word – but go with it!)

Pink: Caring – innovative – quirky – creative.

White: Pristine – innocence – purity – cleanliness.

Black: Sophistication – power – elegance – authority.
(and put the colours all together – you get our logo!!!)

With that in mind, your garden as opposed to our logo, the colours of plants and associated purchases at WLGV can affect your spaces. Pastels do change the tone of both the colour and thought process. Paler, pastel colours such as pinks, blues and yellows are gentle and soothing. In the garden they are ideal for all kinds of pastimes from reading a book to entertaining.

Whites, cream and soft colours can be spectacular. Add some subtle lights in your garden and the results can be magical at night.

Blues and purples are linked to the soul and remind us of the sea, perfect for coastal themed gardens. These colours encourage butterflies and, believe it or not, bees, with particular favourites being Buddleia, Delphiniums and Rosemary.

Bright colours energise and offer a WOW to the garden. Bright colours can be a focal point, perhaps positioned to lift a mood or displayed around a children’s area. Red, orange and yellow looks as if the flowers in your garden are nearer.

Consider the full look too. Pots (we have lots) can be subtle to fully display brighter coloured flowers or bright to reflect greens, or more muted tones. Similarly, garden furniture and soft furnishings, water features, statues and decorations (we have lots of all those too) contribute to the vibe and atmosphere of your garden, your space.

So colour is important in your life and your outdoor areas but don’t be overwhelmed or feel you have to stick to ideas or rules. It is your space. Let your creativity flow and enjoy the thought process (including a break and perhaps a cake in our restaurant?) and the results.

We have an amazing choice and it is backed up with great stock levels too, to take home today or with pretty quick home delivery, if your purchases are too big or bulky and, if you need some advice for colours, planting, or even recommendations for the best cakes, we are here to help too.
